Cusco information
A city built by the Spanish on the solid remains of Inca temples and palaces, Cusco is a destination worth exploring for several days.
The conqueror Francisco Pizarro, arrived in the city in November 1533 and was amazed by the beauty of the place and marveled at the waste of precious metals they found. These were used in temples throughout the city.
The Spaniards took most of the gold and brought it back to Spain, but the remains of the Inca architecture bear witness to the city’s glorious past.
Near the center is Sacsayhuaman, an imposing fortress and ceremonial center that each June provides the setting for the celebration of Inti Raymi, the Inca festival of the summer solstice.
Beyond the fortress is Kenko, the small fortified hill of Puca Pucara and the imposing imperial baths of Tambomachay.
- Altitude: 3,400 meters / 11,152 feet above sea level
- Weather: Dry with sunny days and cold nights
- Temperature: 50 – 74 ºF. – 10 – 24 ºC. approximately
- Rainy season: December to March
What to do in Cusco?
Tour the Historical Center – Touring the center of Cusco is like visiting a giant museum. In its streets you can see Inca temples and colonial churches. The city is also famous for its nightlife and the diversity of tourist services such as: restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, etc.
Visit Sacsayhuaman – The archaeological complex of Sacsayhuaman is made up of several archaeological buildings such as Qenqo, Pucapucara, Tambomachay and Sacsayhuaman itself, a fortress with walls made of huge rocks of up to 120 tons. During the tour you can also appreciate tunnels, walls, platforms, roads, altars, water channels and much more.
Visit Coricancha – The most important temple of the entire Inca empire was the Coricancha (even more important than Machupicchu). The walls of this enclosure are the most finely carved in the empire. Before the arrival of the Spaniards it was covered with gold and silver sheets. Later it was sacked and on its walls the invaders built the church of Santo Domingo.
Go to the Sacred Valley of the Incas – Next to Cusco is one of the most fertile and beautiful areas of the region: the Sacred Valley. There the Incas built cities, temples, terraces and palaces. Currently in this area are settled the tourist towns of Pisac, Chinchero, Maras, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo. Visitors can enjoy its landscapes, visit its archaeological sites and even practice adventure sports.
Go to the South Valley of Cusco – South of the city of Cusco there is a fertile valley where the Incas built important temples such as Tipon and Racchi. From the south the first Incas migrated to Cusco. There also exists an important city of the Wari culture (pre-Inca) called Piquillacta. The South Valley is also famous for its exquisite typical dishes such as the chactado guinea pig or the chancho al horno.
Visit the 7 Colors Mountain – A few years ago, the thawing of a part of the Ausangate snow-capped mountain revealed a unique landscape of various colors produced by the minerals found there. The Mountain 7 Colors or Vinicunca is today one of the main attractions of Cusco. It is more than 120 kilometers from Cusco and more than 5 thousand meters high (16,404 ft). Despite the cold and the altitude, hundreds of tourists arrive there every day.
Visit Machu Picchu – Definitely the main tourist attraction of Cusco is Machupicchu. This citadel is located almost 100 kilometers from the city, after a trip by car and train. The Inca city is located in the jungle region of Cuzco. It is famous for its beautiful landscapes, mysterious constructions and trekking routes such as the Huayna Picchu mountain and the Machupicchu mountain.
Doing the Inca Trail – One of the most famous trekking routes in the world is the Inca Trail. The trails of this walk were built by the Incas several centuries ago. The Inca Trail connects Cusco with Machu Picchu after 4 days of walking and 3 days of camping. On the last day, you will arrive at the Inca city through the ‘Puerta del Sol’ (Intipunku), an ancient gateway used by the Incas.
